Extinction — 絕
The thread is cut: nothing remains of the old form, and nothing yet of the new.
What Extinction means
Extinction is the tenth stage and the lowest point of the cycle. The picture is the moment after the grave, when even the form is gone; the stem's energy on this branch is at its faintest. The older name is Bao 胞, the placenta, which gives the whole method its Korean name, potae, the womb-and-conception count. Jia 甲 meets Extinction on the Monkey 申, Bing 丙 and Wu 戊 on the Pig 亥, Geng 庚 on the Tiger 寅, Ren 壬 on the Snake 巳. Counting backward, Yi 乙 on the Rooster 酉, Ding 丁 and Ji 己 on the Rat 子, Xin 辛 on the Rabbit 卯, Gui 癸 on the Horse 午.
The light of Extinction is renewal. With nothing left of the old shape, everything is possible, and people on this stage change direction faster and more completely than anyone else in the cycle. They leave, start over, reinvent, and often land well. Readers associate the stage with resilience, spiritual openness and a talent for the clean break. The shadow is discontinuity. Extinction energy can be unstable, quick to cut ties, easily swept by whatever is nearby, and prone to swinging from one extreme to another. It has no root of its own on this branch and borrows strength from whatever surrounds it.
Extinction always sits directly across the circle from Official, the stem's own root: Jia's Tiger faces Jia's Monkey, Gui's Rat faces Gui's Horse. The branch that clashes with your foundation is the branch on which you have none. That is why readers weigh Extinction carefully in the day and month positions and read it as a life with a decisive turning point, or several. The misreading is fear. Extinction is not ruin. It is the pause between two forms, and the stage immediately after it is Conception. Most people with Extinction prominent describe their lives as chapters, and the chapters tend to get better.

Each Day Master reaches Extinction on one branch. Find your Day Master; wherever that branch appears in your chart — year, month, day or hour — that pillar is in Extinction.

Personality when it sits under you
Four day pillars sit on Extinction: Jia Shen 甲申, Yi You 乙酉, Geng Yin 庚寅 and Xin Mao 辛卯. If yours is one of them, your life has hinges. You have already changed course more than once, and each time it looked sudden from outside and inevitable from inside. You are resilient in a way that surprises people, able to lose a great deal and start again with something like relief. You are also impressionable, easily carried by a strong person or a strong idea, and capable of cutting ties too fast. The task is continuity. Keep one or two things across every chapter, a friend, a practice, a skill, so that the new form has something of the old in it. Change is your gift; drift is its counterfeit.
Extinction on the month branch places the turning points in your public life. Careers with this placement rarely run in a straight line: a change of field, a move abroad, a business that ends and another that begins. Readers see it often among freelancers, founders, converts and emigrants. Because the month branch is the seat of the parents and of early society, an Extinction month can also mean distance from the family's expectations or from the place you were raised. The strength is adaptability; the caution is that each fresh start costs seniority. A month in Extinction does best when it treats reinvention as a craft, carrying skills and relationships forward deliberately, and when it has a root elsewhere in the chart, an Official or Prosperity branch, to change from.
In each pillar
In a luck pillar or a year
A luck pillar or year in your Extinction stage is a season of endings and clean slates. Something finishes, sometimes abruptly, and the temptation is to fill the space with whatever arrives first. Use the period for closure and for deciding, not for binding yourself. It is a good time for travel, retraining and spiritual work, and a poor time for large fixed commitments. In 2026, the Horse year, Gui 癸 Day Masters are in Extinction; in 2027 they pass to Grave. Two years to clear and then to store, before the cycle turns toward Conception and a new Birth.

FAQ
Is Extinction the worst stage?
It is the weakest, which is different. Extinction gives the stem no root on that branch, so it borrows strength from its surroundings, and that makes it changeable rather than doomed. Many resilient, inventive people carry it. Read it as a turning point, and ask what the rest of the chart supplies.
Why is the method called potae, or bao tai?
From the two stages at the bottom of the cycle. Bao 胞 is the older name for Extinction, the placenta, and Tai 胎 is Conception. Naming the method after them makes the point that the cycle passes through its lowest stage and continues; nobody called it the Death method.
Extinction sits opposite Official. What does that mean?
They are always six branches apart, so the Extinction branch clashes with the branch where the stem has its own root. For Jia that is the Monkey against the Tiger. When a year brings your Extinction branch it also strikes your Official branch, which is why such years unsettle foundations and invite new ones.
