In Korea, checking a couple’s gunghap (궁합), the fit of two birth charts, is an old custom that still comes up before weddings. Matchmakers start from the two Day Masters — the elements of self. Some pairs combine (합), some clash (충), some feed one another. Then they ask what each person is to the other in the Ten Gods: a shelter, a spark, a mirror. Scores are a summary, not a verdict — the reading is in the lines.
Every pair starts at 62. The two Day Masters move it most: stems that combine add 18, one element feeding the other adds 10, the same element adds 4, one element controlling the other takes away 6, and a stem clash takes away 12. Then come the Day Branches, the seat of daily life: a six-harmony adds 12, a trine adds 10, a clash takes away 16. Each element that one of you lacks and the other carries adds 5, up to 10, and opposite polarity (yin with yang) adds 4. The total is kept between 30 and 99.
The reading uses birth dates only, read at noon, so both of you can take part with nothing more than a birthday. It is also symmetrical: the score is the same whichever of you is entered first, and gender plays no part in it.
