Birth — 長生
A newborn taking its first breath: small, fresh, and helped from every side.
What Birth means
Birth is the first of the twelve stages; the picture is a child just born. The stem's energy on this branch is new and growing, and it is not yet expected to carry anything. Every yang stem is already present in its Birth branch as a hidden stem: Jia 甲 waits inside the Pig 亥, Bing 丙 and Wu 戊 inside the Tiger 寅, Geng 庚 inside the Snake 巳, Ren 壬 inside the Monkey 申. The stem is real there, but small. The yin stems are born on the cardinal branches: Yi 乙 on the Horse 午, Ding 丁 and Ji 己 on the Rooster 酉, Xin 辛 on the Rat 子, Gui 癸 on the Rabbit 卯.
The light of Birth is support. A newborn is fed, carried and forgiven, and a Day Master on this branch tends to draw the same treatment from life: teachers appear, doors open, mistakes cost less than they should. The energy is good at absorbing, at learning and at starting. The shadow is the other side of the same picture. What is newly born has not been tested, and a chart that leans on Birth can stay pleasantly unfinished, waiting for the help that has always come rather than building its own strength. Warmth without a task can turn into drift.
Birth is also where the old rule of yang born, yin dying applies. Where a yang stem is born, its yin partner reaches Death: Jia is born on the Pig where Yi dies, Geng on the Snake where Xin dies. Readers use this to remember that the stages are relative, not absolute. The Pig is not a lucky branch or an unlucky one; it is a beginning for one stem and an ending for another. The common misreading is to treat Birth as a guarantee of long life or easy fortune. It describes how the stem's energy behaves on that branch, and nothing more.
Which branch is Birth for you
Each Day Master reaches Birth on one branch. Find your Day Master; wherever that branch appears in your chart — year, month, day or hour — that pillar is in Birth.

Personality when it sits under you
Six day pillars sit on Birth: Bing Yin 丙寅, Wu Yin 戊寅, Ren Shen 壬申, Ding You 丁酉, Ji You 己酉 and Gui Mao 癸卯. If one of these is your day pillar, your Day Master stands on its own Birth branch, and readers describe the person as youthful long past youth. You learn quickly, take instruction without resentment, and keep a beginner's openness in fields where others have gone stale. People help you, often before you ask, and you are trusted with new things because you visibly enjoy them. The homework is finishing. Beginnings are easy for you and endings are not, so the second half of any project needs a structure you build on purpose, or a partner who enjoys the closing stretch.
When the month branch is your Birth stage, the strength shows in public life rather than in temperament. Work tends to arrive through introductions and mentors, and you do best in roles where growth is visible: teaching, research, anything that starts small and is allowed to develop. Your reputation among colleagues is one of promise and good faith. Because the month branch is also the seat of the parents in many readings, a Birth month often points to a supportive home, or at least to one that gave you room to grow. The task is to convert that promise into something that stands without support, usually in the thirties, when the luck pillars move on and the help thins out.
In each pillar
In a luck pillar or a year
A luck pillar or year whose branch is your Birth stage is a season for starting. The energy is fresh, help is easier to find, and things learned now tend to stay. It is not a season for harvest, so expect growth rather than results. In 2026, a Bing Wu 丙午 year, the branch is the Horse, which is the Birth stage of Yi 乙 Day Masters; for them it is a year to plant. Whether the year is also pleasant depends on what the Horse is as a Ten God in your chart and on what it combines with.

FAQ
Is a Birth day pillar always a good sign?
It is a comfortable one, not a guarantee. Birth gives a receptive, well-supported nature and a good start to most things. Whether that becomes a good life depends on the rest of the chart, and on whether you build your own strength as the help falls away with age.
Why is Yi born on the Horse when Wood is not strong in summer?
Because yin stems are counted backward from a different starting point. Yi's Birth on the Horse mirrors Jia's Death there: the rule of yang born, yin dying. Some schools reject the backward count for this reason. Sajucheop follows the traditional method, so its tables and this page agree.
Does Birth mean I will live a long time?
No. The Chinese name Chang Sheng, long life, is the picture of a life beginning, not a forecast of its length. The stages describe the strength of one stem on one branch. Nothing in them predicts health or lifespan, and readers who claim otherwise are stretching the method.
