Same element as the Day Master, same polarity

Friend is the peer star: your own element and polarity, meaning independence, siblings, competition, and self-reliance.

What Friend means

Friend, called Bi Jian (比肩) in Chinese and bigyeon (비견) in Korean, is the stem that shares both the element and the polarity of your Day Master. The name literally means 'shoulder to shoulder'. Classical texts read it as brothers and sisters, peers, colleagues, and the self standing beside another self. Because it neither produces nor controls anything, it does not create wealth or status on its own; it adds weight to the Day Master. In modern reading, Friend describes your capacity to stand on your own feet, to treat others as equals, and to keep your identity intact inside a group. It also describes the people who are most like you: teammates, classmates, business partners, and the friend who tells you the truth.

In a chart, Friend can appear openly as a heavenly stem or quietly as the main hidden stem of an earthly branch. On a stem it is public: people see you as independent, and you compete in the open. Hidden in a branch it works as inner backbone, a private stubbornness that surfaces under pressure. Position matters too. In the year pillar it points to peers and older siblings, and to a competitive social environment early in life. In the month pillar, the seat of career and parents, it usually means a strong Day Master and a self-made streak, often with siblings who shaped you. In the day branch, the spouse palace, it suggests a partner who is an equal and a friend, sometimes a rival. In the hour pillar it speaks of independent children and a self-reliant later life.

The light side of Friend is loyalty, fairness, and stamina. People with a healthy Friend do not fold under criticism, they share credit, and they work well in flat teams. The shadow is rivalry. The same element that supports you also competes for the same resources, which is why classical authors warned that Friend 'divides wealth': partners want the same clients, siblings want the same inheritance, and you may refuse help you actually need. Whether Friend is welcome depends mostly on the strength of the Day Master. A weak Day Master facing heavy wealth or officer stars needs Friend the way a tired hiker needs a companion. A strong Day Master with several Friends becomes crowded, and the chart then wants an outlet, such as Eating God or Hurting Officer, to turn all that self into something useful.

When Friend is prominent

When Friend is prominent, with two or more in the chart or one sitting in the month pillar, the person is self-directed and slow to ask for help. They like clear rules of fairness, dislike favoritism, and tend to judge others by whether they pull their own weight. They are not naturally hierarchical; they would rather be one of several equals than either the boss or the subordinate. Friendships matter and often last decades, and there is usually a circle of peers who function almost like family. Under stress the default is to dig in rather than to negotiate, and they would rather do a job twice themselves than explain it once.

The same traits can read as stubbornness, and the person may be blunt about money and effort in a way others find abrasive. They may also underestimate how much they need cooperation, repeating the pattern of starting alone and only later realizing that a partner would have halved the work. Growth for a strong Friend type usually comes from learning to delegate, accepting advice from people who are not peers, and noticing when competitiveness is running the show. In a weak chart the picture is different: there Friend is a welcome ally, and the person is helped, sometimes literally rescued, by siblings and friends at the moments that count.

Love

Friend in or near the spouse palace tends to attract partners who feel like equals: similar age, similar interests, often met through friends or work. The relationship works best as a team of two independent people with their own space. Watch for competition creeping in, especially over money or recognition. For men, whose wealth stars traditionally represent the wife, a heavy Friend can crowd the wealth star; the practical reading is to guard against treating the partner like a rival.

Money

Friend does not generate money; it shares it. Income usually comes from your own labor rather than from investment or patronage, and finances stay steadier when they are kept separate from friends and siblings. Partnerships can work if roles and shares are written down early. Loans to peers are the classic leak. When Friend is strong and the wealth stars are weak, budget conservatively and build a personal buffer, because this chart spends easily on people.

Career

Friend suits work where you own your output and compete on visible merit: freelancing, professional practice, sales with individual targets, sports, skilled trades, and small partnerships between equals. Flat organizations fit better than steep hierarchies. Roles that require you to defer without explanation will chafe. If the Day Master is weak, Friend stars are a genuine asset in team-based careers, because the support of colleagues is what carries you through heavy workloads or demanding bosses.

Missing, or too much

No Friend in the chartA chart with no Friend at all is common and not a problem in itself. It usually means the person leans on other stars, such as Resource for support or Officer for structure, rather than on peers. Practically it can show as few close friends of the same age, a small family, or a habit of getting things done through mentors and institutions instead of through a circle of equals. If the Day Master is weak and there is no Resource either, the chart lacks internal support, and the person should build a reliable network on purpose rather than assume it will appear.
Three or moreThree or more Friends make the Day Master heavy and crowded. The classic concerns are divided wealth and strained partnerships: too many people want the same thing, and the person may be generous to the point of being taken advantage of. Marriage can feel like a negotiation between rivals. The element itself is overrepresented and needs an outlet. The remedies are structural: an output star to express the surplus, a wealth star to give it a target, or an officer star to organize it. Luck cycles bringing those elements tend to feel like relief; cycles adding more Friend feel like standing in a crowded room.

Friend for each Day Master

FAQ

Is Friend (Bi Jian) good or bad in a BaZi chart?

Neither by itself. Friend strengthens the Day Master, so it helps a weak chart carry heavy wealth or officer stars and hinders a strong chart that is already crowded. Judge it by the balance of the whole chart and by what the luck cycles bring, not by the label.

What does Friend mean for siblings and friends?

Traditionally Friend represents brothers, sisters, and peers. A visible Friend often points to a life shaped by siblings or a tight circle of friends. Its condition, whether it is clashed, combined, or supportive, is read as the tone of those relationships, though it describes a pattern, not a fixed verdict on any one person.

What is the difference between Friend and Rob Wealth?

Both share the Day Master's element. Friend has the same polarity and behaves like a steady peer; Rob Wealth has the opposite polarity and behaves like a bolder, more competitive sibling who takes risks. Friend shares; Rob Wealth grabs. In a weak chart both are helpers, in a strong chart both are competition.
