Chinese gender calendar 2027

The Chinese gender chart guesses boy or girl from two numbers: the mother’s lunar age when she conceived and the lunar month of conception. Most wrong readings come from getting those two numbers wrong, so this calculator works them out from real dates. It is a folk tradition and a coin toss, not a test — more on that below.

Chinese gender chart for babies due in 2027

A baby due in 2027 was conceived between about April 2026 and April 2027, which spans two Chinese years. The Year of the Fire Horse runs from February 17, 2026 to February 5, 2027, and the Year of the Fire Goat from February 6, 2027 to January 25, 2028. Pick the table that holds your conception date, find the row with your birth date, and read across to the lunar month. The dates under each month number are the first and last day of that lunar month.

Birth-date rows change at Chinese New Year, not on January 1, because that is when lunar age goes up. Neither 2026 nor 2027 has a leap month, so each table has exactly twelve columns.

How to read the chart by hand

1. Find your lunar age at conception. Lunar age starts at one on the day you are born and goes up at every Chinese New Year, not on your birthday. The quick way: take the Chinese year of conception, subtract the Chinese year you were born in, and add one. If your birthday is in January or February, check whether it falls before that year’s New Year; if it does, you belong to the previous Chinese year. The lunar age calculator does this for any date.

2. Find the lunar month of conception. Lunar months start at the new moon, so they never line up with January, February and the rest. Use the tables above, or the full list of month dates below.

3. Read the cell where the age row and the month column meet.

An example. A mother born on January 20, 1995 has a due date of June 26, 2027. Conception is about 266 days before the due date: October 3, 2026, which is the 23rd day of the 8th lunar month of 2026. Her birthday falls before Chinese New Year 1995 (January 31, 1995), so her Chinese birth year is 1994 and her lunar age is 2026 − 1994 + 1 = 33. She is 31 by the Western count, so a calculator that simply adds one would say 32 and read the wrong row. Age 33, month 8: the chart says boy.

The full chart

Rows are the mother’s lunar age at conception, columns are the lunar month of conception. The chart itself never changes from year to year; only the dates of the lunar months and your own age do. Of its 336 cells, 164 say boy and 172 say girl.

The full calendars, with the lunar date of every day: Chinese calendar 2026 · Chinese calendar 2027.

These are dates on the Chinese calendar, counted in Beijing time. Korea’s lunar calendar is counted an hour ahead, so now and then a month starts a day later there: the 9th month of 2026 and New Year 2027 are two examples (why the dates differ).

Why two calculators can give different answers

Lunar age worked out the wrong way. The most common shortcut is “Western age plus one”. That is right for part of the year and a year short for the rest: from Chinese New Year until your birthday, lunar age is Western age plus two. Some tools also forget that a January or early-February birthday can belong to the previous Chinese year.

Calendar months instead of lunar months. A chart read with “March” as month three is reading the wrong column about half the time.

Leap months. Some years repeat a month. This calculator follows the usual Chinese practice: the first fifteen days of a leap month count with the month before it, the rest with the month after. When that matters for your dates, the result says so.

An uncertain conception date. Due dates and cycle lengths are estimates. If your conception date is within two days of a lunar month boundary, the result shows what the neighbouring month says too.

Different copies of the chart. A few versions with different cells are in circulation. The one here is the most widely published, and matches the copies we checked cell by cell.

How accurate is it?

About as accurate as tossing a coin. The best test so far, published in Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology in 2010, ran the chart against the records of about 2.8 million births in Sweden and found it right 50% of the time. You will meet people for whom it was right every time; with odds of one in two, a family with three children has a one in eight chance of a perfect score.

If you want to know, an ultrasound at around 18 to 20 weeks or a prenatal blood test from about 10 weeks can tell you; your doctor or midwife can say what is offered where you live. The chart cannot choose a baby’s sex either: planning a conception month around it will not change the odds.

Where the chart comes from

The story printed with the chart is that it was drawn up for the Qing imperial family, or found in a royal tomb near Beijing, some 300 or 700 years ago depending on who tells it, and that the original is kept in a museum. No such original has ever been shown, and historians have found no record of it. What can be said is that it has been printed in Chinese almanacs and newspapers since at least the twentieth century, and that it uses ideas that are genuinely old: lunar months, age counted from one, and the pairing of odd and even numbers with yang and yin.

In Korea: the “imperial calendar” and conception dreams

In Korea the chart is known as 중국 황실 달력, the Chinese imperial calendar, and it goes around parenting forums with every pregnancy announcement. Koreans grew up counting age from one, so many read the chart with their Korean age, but that age goes up on January 1 rather than at Lunar New Year, and the two differ for conceptions in January and early February. See the Korean age calculator for the difference.

The older Korean way of guessing is 태몽 (taemong), a conception dream. Someone close to the baby, often the mother or a grandmother, has a vivid dream early in the pregnancy, and the family reads it: dragons, tigers and large fruit are usually taken to mean a son, flowers, small fruit and jewellery a daughter. Like the chart, it is a way of talking about a child who has not arrived yet, not a forecast. If your baby is due in 2027, here is what a Fire Goat year means in a saju chart.

FAQ

Is the Chinese gender calendar accurate?

No better than chance. A 2010 study of about 2.8 million Swedish births found the chart correct 50% of the time. Treat it as a game; an ultrasound or a prenatal blood test is the way to know.

Do I use my age at conception or at birth?

Your lunar age on the day of conception. Lunar age counts from one at birth and goes up at each Chinese New Year, so it is one or two years more than your Western age.

What is different about the 2027 calendar?

The chart itself never changes. What changes each year are the dates of the lunar months and your lunar age. For a baby due in 2027, conception falls in the Chinese year 2026 if it was before February 6, 2027, and in 2027 from that day on.

What if I conceived in a leap month?

Count the first fifteen days with the month before it and the rest with the month after. There is no leap month in 2026 or 2027; the next one is a leap 5th month in 2028.

I only know my due date. Can I still use the chart?

Yes. Conception is on average 266 days before the due date, or about 14 days after the first day of the last period. The calculator accepts any of the three dates and tells you when the estimate sits close to a month boundary.

Does the father’s age or the baby’s birth month matter?

Not for this chart. It uses only the mother’s lunar age at conception and the lunar month of conception.

Can the chart predict twins?

No. It gives one answer per pregnancy and has nothing to say about twins.
