The ten Day Masters —
which nature are you?

Sajucheop library · one archetype for each of the ten heavenly stems

Your chart has eight characters and only one of them is you: the Day Master (일간, ilgan), the heavenly stem of your birth day. There are ten — a tree, a sun, a mountain, the dew — and each reads the world differently. Find yours below, or enter your birth date and let the chart tell you.

How the ten are built

Five elements, each in a yang and a yin form, make the ten heavenly stems. The yang stems — Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng and Ren — are the outward, expansive side of their element: the tall pine, the midday sun. The yin stems — Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin and Gui — are the inward, refined side: the vine, the candle flame. Neither is better; they are two ways of being the same element.

The Day Master decides how every other character in the chart is read. The same Fire is output to a Wood person, a peer to a Fire person and pressure to a Metal person — that is the logic of the Ten Gods. Whether a Day Master is strong or weak changes the reading again, and the branch it sits on gives the 60 Day Pillars.

Don’t know your birth time, or just curious? Twelve quick questions estimate which of the ten you are by temperament — then compare the guess with the real thing.
